San Agustín, Huila
MY TRAVEL EXPERIENCE
San Agustín is one of the most fascinating archaeological destinations in Colombia. It should be on your bucket list because it brings together history, nature, and culture. Travelers from all over the world come here to walk around ancient statues and find out the mysteries of the past.
Question: Why should San
Agustín be on your bucket list?
I visited San Agustín last summer, and it was unforgettable. You must visit this place if you want to discover Colombia’s archaeological treasures. The town is calm, the people are kind, and the atmosphere makes you slow down and take in every detail.
WHERE TO GO
-San Agustín Archaeological Park
You must go to this UNESCO World Heritage Site. You can walk through the paths,
check out hundreds of statues, and listen to the guide explain their history.
You should take photos, but you also have to put away your phone for a moment
to really enjoy the atmosphere.
-The Magdalena Strait
You should head out to the place where the Magdalena River passes through a
narrow canyon. You can look down at the strong water flow and take in the
amazing view. You must be careful, but you can hang out near the rocks and feel
the power of nature.
WHAT TO DO
In San Agustín, you can join a guided tour, and you should ask questions to learn more about the statues. You might want to check out horseback tours because they let you go around the hills and farms. You must try local food, and you can also sit down in the main square to chat with locals and pick up some stories. At night, you should hang out with other travelers in small cafés and share your experiences.
TRAVELS TIPS
- You must explore the Archaeological Park early in the morning to avoid crowds.
- You should try local dishes, especially arepas de maíz pelao.
- You have to use safe transportation, so you might want to book a private tour or taxi.
- You should bring cash because small shops and cafés do not always take cards.
